A Permanent History of Women Filmmakers

This year, we celebrate women filmmakers who have directed a handful of rare films or just a single film, such as the actress Barbara Loden Wanda. Either voluntarily stepping away from the director’s chair or leaving against their will, these filmmakers have nonetheless made a mark with their personal and significant works.

After the death of her mother, Manuela finds herself in a boarding school, where strict rules and discipline prevail. Manuela finds solace with Miss Von Bernburg... One of the very first lesbian films in cinema history.

Paris 1900 by Nicole Védrès (1947, 1h22)
A montage of archives for an enthralling testimony to the Paris of the beginning of the century, from 1900 to 1914, which highlights a striking contrast between the social life of the Belle Époque and war on the horizon.

Together by Lorenza Mazzetti (1956, 52min) 
This experimental and poetic film from the only female – and Italian – cofounder of the Free Cinema movement of England, follows the daily life of two deaf and mute dockworkers, solitary and solidary friends, linked by their handicap.

Wanda by Barbara Loden (1970, 1h37) 
Wanda is a divorced young woman with no motivation or prospects. She meets Dennis, a cruel, small-time thief, and becomes his accomplice... A deeply emotional film, by Barbara Loden, who also plays the title role.

Living Together by Anna Karina (Vivre ensemble, 1973, 1h33)  
Alain leaves Sylvie to go live with Julie and runs the risk of losing everything... Anna Karina takes us to Paris’ Latin Quarter and the New York underground of the 1970s.
